The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to perform effectively as a Retail Buyer. A Retail Buyer is responsible for sourcing, buying, and allocating stock for wholesale and retail outlets while managing supplier relationships and stock performance.
On completion of this qualification, the learner will be able to manage supplier relationships, source and select appropriate suppliers, buy merchandise profitably, and allocate stock effectively to stores in line with organisational objectives.
The Wholesale and Retail sector has identified the roles of Buyer and Planner as scarce skills at both sectoral and national level. Typical learners include unemployed individuals with Grade 12 as well as employed learners currently working in supervisory or management roles who wish to progress into buying or planning positions.
Retail Buyers and Planners play a critical role in managing organisational cash flow through effective buying decisions and stock allocation. Competent Buyers contribute significantly to improved operational efficiency, reduced stock losses, and enhanced profitability, thereby making a positive contribution to organisational sustainability and the broader economy.
